不要使用限制性从句。从句“that are dirty”对于“motel rooms”的意思来说是必不可少的。不需要逗号。

错误: The dog understood at once, what his handler wanted.
正确: The dog understood at once what his handler wanted.
不要把动词和它的直接宾语或补语分开。从句“what his handler wanted”是动词understand的宾语。

错误: Jethro wanted to be either a brain surgeon, or a fry cook.
正确: Jethro wanted to be either a brain surgeon or a fry cook.
不要用逗号分隔由坐标连词连接的成对元素。配对的元素是“一个脑外科医生”和“一个油炸厨师”。不需要逗号。

不要把介绍性独立(主)子句与后面的独立子句分开。“著名作家住在一个小镇上”是主句
